Beginning Cartonnage: Fabric Notebook Cover

Cartonnage is the lovely handmade art of box making. With cardboard, glue and fabric you can make beautiful items to decorate your home, for everyday use,
or to give as unique gifts.

With step by step instructions, Jill will guide you through this process so that you leave class with a beautifully finished project – no sewing involved!

In Beginning Cartonnage, you will make a reusable fabric notepad cover measuring 8.5” x 6.75”. You will learn the simple techniques needed to create a finished project with crisp, clean finishing. These techniques are the building blocks for more complicated projects and classes to be offered in the future!

What to bring? In addition to two coordinating fat quarters, all you need to bring is your rotary cutter, a 12" x 18" cutting mat, and a small (5" or 6") sharp fabric scissors! A quilting ruler (12" x 3" or similar) might be helpful, but is not necessary. Supplies and your kit will be provided by the instructor.
$25 kit/supply fee due day of class, paid to instructor. 

Who can take this class? This class is for those age 16 and over who enjoy making beautiful and useful things! No sewing is involved, so grab your non-sewing friends! This project is perfect for those leftover fabrics or extra fat quarters you have in your quilting stash!

A note about fabric choices:

100 % cotton -  Quality quilt cotton available through your local quilt shop is the best choice for obtaining an easy and beautiful finish. Be cautious about inexpensive quilt fabrics available at the big box stores. Quality varies and you can end up having problems with glue soaking through and marring the finish.  Fat quarters often work well and are available in a variety of coordinating patterns and colors. 

Avoid solid fabric -  Sometimes glue soaks through the fabric and leaves marks on the outside. Patterned fabrics or “Grunge” fabrics are more forgiving and better camouflage any seepage.

Batiks  -  Batiks are a wonderful choice! They work perfectly,  and the corners are easily done and turn out perfectly.

Light or dark fabric -  it depends.... if it's your first project light or medium colors (not white) are recommended. Darker fabric will show glue marks more. Once you have more experience, you can try darker fabrics.

Directional prints, stripes, and plaids – again, these types of prints require extra care and should be avoided for your first project. They can make for some very striking effects on your projects, so definitely try them after you have gained experience!
